What's in our fridge: Frisee

can guinea pigs eat frisee

We thought Truffle was a picky eater... until Abby-Roo came along. She spat out cranberries, made faces at basil leaves, bolted at the scent of bananas, and gave blueberries the occasional half-hearted nibble. Even classic guinea pig forage favorites like clover and dandelion flowers didn't tempt her into venturing outside her food comfort zone.

Frisée was a different story. Given Abby-Roo's previous reactions to being presented with new foods, we were delighted when she devoured the frizzy plant straight away.

Thank You

March marks several things - the beginning of spring, the official Adopt Rescued Guinea Pigs month, and for us here, the two year anniversary of the Cali Cavy Collective blog!

Eager for grass

130321a

We've had some warm weekends lately and the peegs have been journeying outdoors to eat crop circles into the lawn and to soak up the sun. They love being able to luxuriate in the grass but aren't at all fond of waiting in their traveling box.

Vegetable growing attempt for the guineas

Picked up a few seed packets over the weekend from a local nursery: lettuce for pigs, tomatoes for both humans and pigs, marigolds as a tomato companion plant, sunflowers to brighten up the yard, and alpine strawberries as a fanciful whim.

Happy Saint Parsley's Day

Wishing everyone and their wheekers a happy, food-filled Saint Parsley's Day!

Almost cuddling cavies

130314

Legend has it that some piggies prefer to snooze curled up next to each other. Well, not any of the Cali Cavy Collective pigs. Poof and Revy long ago enacted strict no sharing rules in their respective domains. Offenders are met with stern piggy stares and a warning flash of teeth.

Playtime with the Egg-cersizer

The piggies become enthusiastic whenever they see the Egg-cersizer in their cage, filled with treats and ready to be manhandled - make that cavyhandled.

8th Candle Light Memorial

coppy

We want to pass along a notice from the Undercover Guinea Pigs reminding everyone about the 8th Candle Light Memorial in honor of Peter Gurney, a well known guinea pig welfare advocate and rodentologist from the Cambridge Cavy Trust.

All are invited to participate in remembrance of their pigs and other animal friends at the Rainbow Bridge. We will be lighting our candles on March 9th at 8pm again this year.

If you wish to join, please read the notice here

Guinea Pig Toys: Egg-cersizer treat dispenser

eggcersizer guinea pig treat dispenser review

I first came across the Funkitty Egg-cersizer when Bertie and Pinniped from Crafts, Cavies and Cooking tried it out. After spotting it at a local independent pet store we decided to let our wheekers put it to the test.

Marketed as a cat toy, holes on the side of the egg allow treats to fall out when it is rolled around. The openings can be adjusted to make playtime easier or more challenging depending on the cavy's level of motivation. Some treats work better than others to keep guinea pigs active and engaged.

Anything for carrots

Food is an excellent motivator. Revy will go along with nearly anything for carrots, from toenail trimming to reclining on her back.

March is Adopt Rescued Guinea Pigs Month! The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness of the many guinea pigs in shelters, find them forever homes, introduce new piggy parents to proper guinea pig care, and promote better welfare for all wheekers year round.
