Crunching on cranberries

can guinea pigs eat cranberries

Fresh cranberries are a seasonal favorite with almost every guinea pig here. The crisp, tart fruit is the perfect size for demanding cavies to nibble on as a treat.

Adventurous eater Belka is always excited to be presented with a cranberry or two. Although Truffle is normally more reserved when it comes to foods outside her typical diet, she is happy to munch away.

Voracious eaters Peaches and Poof are also fans of these winter berries. Below, Peaches can be seen implementing her stealthy slink-under-the-nose food thieving maneuver in order to snatch the remainder of Poof's cranberry.

Sweet-toothed Revy loves all fruits, including cranberries. Picky little Abby-Roo is the only pig who dislikes them. Early on, buoyed by the enthusiasm of the surrounding cavies, she mistook one for a blueberry and took a giant bite. Upon finding herself with a mouthful of cranberry instead, she promptly spat it out. To this day Abby-Roo harbors a heartfelt animosity towards cranberries.

As always, cranberries should be given fresh and uncooked. It is best to avoid dried varieties, which can be high in sugar. To keep a stash year round, try freezing and storing raw cranberries for your piggies.

Are there any other piggy cranberry fans out there?

    1. Happy to be of service Tevis! The piggies oblige, especially because food is involved :)

  2. I love the pictures, as always they are so adorable! I like the evil eye Abby-roo is giving to her nemesis, The Cranberry. Thanks for sharing! My pigs aren't big fans, sadly, but maybe I will try again this year.

    1. Haha, I caught her in the process of making a face and preparing to run away. Pigs can be so particular about foods.. its funny to watch how they're never shy about letting us know their opinions!

    1. Good luck! Here they all seem to disappear after November, hopefully you don't have to resort to scavenging across the pond.

  4. Love Abby-Roo's stink-eye. Such disappointment!

Pinniped and Bertie love cranberries. I have to keep them in stock when I can get them. Willow and Pippin used to like them as a very rare treat, but would get bored of them quickly, so on handful a year would be enough to do them.

  5. We have 2 piggies. Princess happily munched on cranberries at Thanksgiving. Katie wouldn't have anything to do with them. Princess is my veggie garbage disposal. Katie is definately a lot more discriminating.
