Breakfast with Revy

Breakfast with Revy

Chocolate. Popsicles. Toast. And now, add green smoothies to the list of foods that overly curious cavies have tried to sneak a taste of.

When Breakfast Is Late

Poof waiting for bell pepper

Every morning, Poof and Belka are the first ones waiting at the cage doors. After all, it's common cavy knowledge that the early pig gets the treat. Or more of them, anyways.

Mowing Season Is Here

It's that time of year again! No, not the holidays. Spring! Blossoms are sprouting, pigs are rejoicing over fresh grass... and us humans are stuck battling the explosion of weeds. But never mind about that.

The Cali Cavy girls were all too happy to get outside the weekend before last. There was even a short term ceasefire that held for a good twenty minutes as they focused on the lawn. After all, priorities! Eat first, squabble later. You can see how thrilled they are in the video.

Guinea Pig Plushie Herd

Poof and guinea pig plushies

Over the years, I've amassed quite a collection of plush guinea pigs. A birthday gift here, a holiday present there... before I knew it, I had an entire herd hanging out by the bookshelf. I've been meaning to take a photo of them for the longest time so here it is!

Blueberry Antics

Poof and Truffle

It's no secret that the Cali Cavy girls looove their blueberries. And when I say love, I mean they'll even freely climb over each other to get to the prize.

A Guinea Pig Christmas

Feliz Navidad! Wishing you a happy, food-filled holiday season from all of us here at Cali Cavy.

The girls have been busy spreading holiday cheer (and piggy beans) from their festively decorated cage. Poinsettia fleece, embroidered stockings, themed cozies, a fleece sleigh, lights, and tinsel garlands - the whole shebang.

Got Apples?

Guinea pigs Belka and Poof love to eat apple

Thanks to the drought, the few apples we managed to grow this year were much smaller and more tart than usual. Not that the girls minded. The golf ball sized fruits happened to be just the right size for cavy consumption.

Pig Sized Pillows

Abby-Roo pillows

Some time ago I found a woodland creatures themed fleece pattern and sewed a couple of pillows for the pigs to use. Initially, the girls were duly unimpressed. "Is this edible? No. Well, then is it a cozy? Hmph, too small."

Summer, Guinea Pig Style

140603

For humans, the start of summer goes hand in hand with sunblock, celebratory cookouts, refreshing cool drinks, and breezy evenings spent outdoors.

For the pigs, summer means dodging baths, corn husks, watermelon rinds, and warm afternoons spent grazing on the lawn. They haven't had as many lawn mowing opportunities lately so they make quick work of the grass when given the chance. It only takes about half an hour for oddly shaped crop circles to appear in the turf.

Floor Time Foraging

Spilled Pellets

Floor time happens to be a prime opportunity to cause mischief... or so the pigs believe.
Our usual routine is to change the cage while they stretch their legs and look for opportunities to cause piggy trouble.

Hay Box for One

Abby-Roo Hay Box

The empty cardboard strawberry cartons we get from the local market happen to be the perfect size for filling with hay. To encourage foraging I toss in a mix of timothy, orchard, and bluegrass.

Greener on the Other Side

The pigs took advantage of the weather last weekend with an extended lawn mowing session. The first thirty minutes or so passed uneventfully as the girls did their best to convince us that they had been starved skinny.

Guinea Pig's Definition of Spring

Spring grass means happy pigs

Never mind what their groundhog friends say. For the pigs, spring officially arrives when they can finally start grazing on fresh grass outdoors.

Dinnertime Madness

Leafy Hat

The pigs are in firm agreement with the proverb, "keep your friends close and your food closer."

Hidden Peaches

Hidden Peaches

Lately Peaches has picked up a funny new cuddle time habit - of settling down with her nose underneath a fold of fabric.

Pigloo Barricade

Abby-Roo's pigloo barricade

Cage changing is a cause of much excitement for the pigs.

Fresh hay! New fleece! Different hideaways! The girls show their enthusiasm with zoomies and the occasional popcorn. Except for Poof, who is more likely to convey approval by moseying over at her leisure.

Fur Styling for Abby-Roo

Fur styling for Roo

Being an extraordinary fluffy pig occasionally has its drawbacks. Abby-Roo is lamentably familiar with fur trims, rump inspections, and frequent butt baths.. However, her most recent grooming session brought a new surprise: a braid.

Piggy Chin Pettage

Peaches chin pettage

Piggy chins. Chubby and covered with velvety fur, it is difficult to resist petting them. Naturally though, not every guinea pig is a fan of this whimsy and each has a different method of expressing their opinions.

Edible Veggie Tree

Edible Tree: Before

The pigs got a special holiday surprise: an edible Christmas tree! Made out of a few of their favorite veggies, the culinary creation took us twenty minutes to assemble - and only two minutes for them to demolish.

Dodging the Carrier

Revy on grass
"Grass?! NOM." -Revy

As temperatures drop and autumn settles in, the pigs have had increasingly few opportunities to graze outdoors. Luckily for them, last weekend was warm enough for a brief chow session... not that they were willing to cooperate.
