Mowing Season Is Here

It's that time of year again! No, not the holidays. Spring! Blossoms are sprouting, pigs are rejoicing over fresh grass... and us humans are stuck battling the explosion of weeds. But never mind about that.

The Cali Cavy girls were all too happy to get outside the weekend before last. There was even a short term ceasefire that held for a good twenty minutes as they focused on the lawn. After all, priorities! Eat first, squabble later. You can see how thrilled they are in the video.

Summer, Guinea Pig Style

140603

For humans, the start of summer goes hand in hand with sunblock, celebratory cookouts, refreshing cool drinks, and breezy evenings spent outdoors.

For the pigs, summer means dodging baths, corn husks, watermelon rinds, and warm afternoons spent grazing on the lawn. They haven't had as many lawn mowing opportunities lately so they make quick work of the grass when given the chance. It only takes about half an hour for oddly shaped crop circles to appear in the turf.

Greener on the Other Side

The pigs took advantage of the weather last weekend with an extended lawn mowing session. The first thirty minutes or so passed uneventfully as the girls did their best to convince us that they had been starved skinny.

Guinea Pig's Definition of Spring

Spring grass means happy pigs

Never mind what their groundhog friends say. For the pigs, spring officially arrives when they can finally start grazing on fresh grass outdoors.

Dodging the Carrier

Revy on grass
"Grass?! NOM." -Revy

As temperatures drop and autumn settles in, the pigs have had increasingly few opportunities to graze outdoors. Luckily for them, last weekend was warm enough for a brief chow session... not that they were willing to cooperate.

Ready to go

Ready to go
"Mom, bring me home!" -Truffle

Many guinea pigs would be utterly content to spend their entire day on the lawn, alternatively grazing and lounging. Truffle, not so much.

Guinea Pig Predator Safety Reminder

While we've been working away on the site, the piggies have been working away on the lawn. So much grass, so little time!

Piggy traveling complaints

"Are we there yet?" -Truffle

The pigs look forward to the weekend as much as any human does - it means quality grass chomping time! However, they aren't as fond of the trip over in their traveling container.

Eager for grass

130321a

We've had some warm weekends lately and the peegs have been journeying outdoors to eat crop circles into the lawn and to soak up the sun. They love being able to luxuriate in the grass but aren't at all fond of waiting in their traveling box.

Vegetable growing attempt for the guineas

Picked up a few seed packets over the weekend from a local nursery: lettuce for pigs, tomatoes for both humans and pigs, marigolds as a tomato companion plant, sunflowers to brighten up the yard, and alpine strawberries as a fanciful whim.

Abby-Roo follows the feet

Abby-Roo doesn't like to sit outside by herself on the grass so she stays close to a safe entity, be it another cavy or a piggy slave's foot. Sometimes this results in her chasing somebody across half the lawn before getting to a secure enclosure.

Abby-Roo's lawn time shenanigans

Little Abby-Roo loves being outside on the lawn. When given the opportunity she is content to scurry through the grass, chutting loudly all the while - or attempt to break into the other pigs enclosure, where Poof is always happy to deliver warning bites to show who is boss.

And a side of melon, please

Just to be on the safe side, our humans always accompany us guinea pigs whenever we have an outing on the lawn. Since we are such VIPs (Very Important Pigs), they also act as our personal bodyguards. Usually they bring a book to read or something to snack on while we chow on grass.

Afternoon on the lawn

"Its not time to go in yet, is it?"

There's nothing we pigs enjoy more than spending a sunny afternoon outside munching grass on the lawn.

4.13.2012

Grow, grass, grow!

Sadly, we piggies haven't been allowed outside lately as it has been pouring buckets for the past week. Forget cats and dogs, it has been raining cavies and capys in not-so-sunny California.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter! Wishing every piggy and their slaves (reasonable amounts of) tasty Easter carrots. As for the picture above, it is our version of this picture from icanhazcheezburger.com.

Out on the lawn

Now that autumn is winding down and chilly winter fronts have begun blowing in, we no longer get to play and munch grass outside on the lawn. Since whee guinea pigs are particularly susceptible to upper respiratory infections (URIs), our humans don't let us go out for fear of us catching a draft. Such a shame, especially since the grass finally started to grow back in again.
