8th Candle Light Memorial

coppy

We want to pass along a notice from the Undercover Guinea Pigs reminding everyone about the 8th Candle Light Memorial in honor of Peter Gurney, a well known guinea pig welfare advocate and rodentologist from the Cambridge Cavy Trust.

All are invited to participate in remembrance of their pigs and other animal friends at the Rainbow Bridge. We will be lighting our candles on March 9th at 8pm again this year.

If you wish to join, please read the notice here.

Piggy Veggie Beards - A Gallery of Messy Eaters

On cavies, veggie beards are not actual beards, but rather a figurative beard composed of dripping vegetable or fruit juices that the pig has managed to accumulate on his lips, chin or neck fur. This grubby yet adorable phenomenon can be observed after a spirited meal.

How to dry corn husks for guinea pigs

Morry, Sharky and Coppy appreciate the results of their slaves hard work

Now that summer is around the corner, corn has been popping up for sale at our local markets. While guinea pigs shouldn't have too much corn, the husks are another story. They are nutritionally similar to grass and hay (31.6% crude fiber, 2.6% crude protein), making them a healthy snack.

Since every cavy here loves corn husks, we always pick up as much as possible and set some aside to dry and save for later. Dried husks are a favorite piggy treat that can be enjoyed even when corn goes out of season. Here are instructions on how to prepare them.

Smiling piggy

"Say WHEEK!"

Our humans particularly like this picture because it looks like Coppy is smiling for the camera. Those piggy lips!

Grow, grass, grow!

Sadly, we piggies haven't been allowed outside lately as it has been pouring buckets for the past week. Forget cats and dogs, it has been raining cavies and capys in not-so-sunny California.

Hug your piggies daily!

Morry

Don't forget to hug your piggies daily! Like every other pet, guinea pigs need love and affection. The more time you spend talking to, feeding, and handling them, the closer your bond will be. With time, your cavy will learn to be more trusting and comfortable around you.

Support adoption, don't breed guinea pigs

This little piggy says "adopt, don't shop!"
Hooray!

The article we wrote on supporting adoption has been published on Guinea Pig Today. Read it here.

March 9th Candlelight Memorial

coppy

We wanted to pass this message along from Audrey at the Guinea Pig Daily Digest to all cavies and their slaves. Some of you may be familiar with Peter Gurney, perhaps the most well known Rodentologist from the Cambridge Cavy Trust (founded by Vedra Stanley-Spatcher). This memorial is held every year in remembrance of Peter Gurney and all of our piggy friends whom have since left for the Rainbow Bridge. The email message below explains everything in more detail.

Skidding around on the floor

Hardwood floors make it difficult for our piggy feet to keep traction! Coppy and Sharky always used to skid around madly during out of cage time - and not always intentionally.

Hidden cavies

Shh, humans... can't you see we piggies are busy trying to nap under here?

Corn husks, a guinea pig favorite!

Many people have let their cavy nibble the occasional ear of corn (fresh and uncooked of course), but what they don't know is that guinea pigs can also eat corn husks. As much as we guinea pigs enjoy eating corn itself, we love the corn husks even more! It is one of our most favorite foods, next to fresh grass.

A Guinea Pig's Normal Body Temperature

Fellow cavies, does your human like to spend extra time cuddling you on chilly days? Well, this is because us guinea pigs operate at a higher normal body temperature than humans do!

Merry Pigmas!

A guinea pig's breakfast in bed

Coppy surveys her breakfast offerings

Every human has experienced days when they just don't want to get out of bed in the morning. Well, the same is true for us guinea pigs! Except when humans stay in bed they get called lazy - when piggies stay in bed (or in this case, our cuddle cup cozies) whee get called cute.

12.01.2011

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Oh, really human? You think whee didn't notice? Hard not to notice the holidays are near when your cage looks like this. Just one of the many joys of having a C&C cage, cage decorating becomes easy for your humans to go crazy with seasonal fleece fabrics.

All bundled up

Nothing like fleece straight from the dryer and corn husks to munch on!

Brrrr! It's been getting pretty nippy over here, and whee didn't even bite anybody.

Coppy the cuddle cavy

Sleeping Coppy

Nothing like curling up for a nap after a delicious leafy meal of greens! Our humans always enjoy cuddle time with us guinea piggies and think its especially cute when we stretch out on the couch next to them.
