Guinea Pig Felt Ornament Tutorial

Peaches with felt guinea pig Christmas ornament

Deck the halls with... no, not boughs of holly. With herds of guinea pigs!

As promised, here's our craft tutorial for making guinea pig ornaments out of felt. The free template contains a basic potato-shaped piggy pattern, along with two ears. These would make a great gift for the crazy cavy person in your life. Bonus points for personalizing the ornament to match a real-life pig.

I still have four custom pigs left to make before Christmas... Belka, Truffle, Poof, and Abby-Roo await!

MATERIALS

  • Felt
  • Template pattern (download)
  • Embroidery thread
  • Ribbon
  • Batting
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Hot glue gun

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by tracing the templates onto the felt. Cut two of each.
  2. Cut out two small circles for the eyes.
  3. Optional: draw and cut out different shapes to make markings.
  4. Using the hot glue gun, glue the eyes, ears, and markings in place.
  5. Optional: if you want the ear flaps to stick out, sew the top edge onto the body with an overcast stitch instead of gluing.
  6. Stitch the front and back together with an overcast stitch, leaving an opening at the top.
  7. Stuff lightly with batting.
  8. Add a loop of ribbon to the top, inserting the ends about half an inch inside the ornament.
  9. Sew the guinea pig closed, making sure to run the needle through the ribbon to secure it in place.
  10. Finish by sewing a running stitch to form the nose and mouth. Admire your felt guinea pig ornament and hang it on the tree!

So, are you interested in making a few? As always, you're welcome to share pictures below. I'd love to see the different piggy incarnations you come up with!

  2. I love it, so cute! I might have to make some myself. Will Abby-roo just be solid white or are you planning something for her signature tail feathers? I need a Wendy angel on my tree!

  4. A Wendy angel would be so sweet! I was just thinking about how to attach wings for Rainbow Bridge pigs. Great minds think alike ;) and yes, I was actually planning something different for Abby-Roo. Gotta include that trademark shark fin of hers!
