Ready to go

Ready to go
"Mom, bring me home!" -Truffle

Many guinea pigs would be utterly content to spend their entire day on the lawn, alternatively grazing and lounging. Truffle, not so much.

After eating her fill, Truffle has a funny way of letting us know when she wants to return home. Around the 45 minute mark she'll start climbing the grids and scanning the area for the nearest human. Upon hearing someone walk by Truffle puts her dainty front paws partway up the grid and stands waiting until she catches their attention.

Truffle is ready to go
"Approaching human, run!" -Belka & Poof

While her cagemates are busy running in the opposite direction (note Belka and Poof determinedly scuttling away in the background) Truffle stays in place and actually waits to be picked up. On occasion she has even half climbed into our hands out of eagerness to go back to her cage.

Grass time is fun, but Truffle prefers to snooze in the fleecy comfort of her cozies - safely indoors.

  3. Oh my goodness...I would do grass time every day just to get her to "hold my hand" like that! She is so sweet :)

  4. She looks so much like Captain Pig, *sob*

What a clever pup, I completely agree with her position on minimising outdoor time and returning to the indors.

    1. Captain Pig must have been adorable then.

Yes, Truffle is not a fan of camping. Or glamping. Or bugs.

  5. excuse me for asking, but how did you get your guinea pigs to be so tame? Mine hate to be picked up and will run away in fright :( once i manage to catch one, they just sit in my lap looking scared for a while. then they seem to lose fear and just start biting me... Please respond!

    1. It takes time, patience, and food bribes to build a trusting relationship with your pigs :)

It's quite common for pigs to dislike being picked up. They may feel more secure if you carry them inside a cozy or cuddle cup. Try giving them veggie treats/favorite foods every time you hold them so they can build a positive association with cuddle time. They will come to trust you in time, although depending on the pig this may take more than several months.

As for the biting... that may be their way of telling you they need to go to the bathroom and want to return to their cage! Often pigs will let you know they want to go home by nipping lightly, tugging at cloth with their teeth, or chattering their teeth.

  6. Smart piggy to ask to come in! Although, my pigs would consider her kind of dumb for not staying outside as long as possible!

I love how they all have different personalities and preferences. Neat!
