Snoozing piggies

Every guinea pig has a preferred nap style. Belka and Truffle like to sleep with their paws stretched out in front of them.

And a side of melon, please

Just to be on the safe side, our humans always accompany us guinea pigs whenever we have an outing on the lawn. Since we are such VIPs (Very Important Pigs), they also act as our personal bodyguards. Usually they bring a book to read or something to snack on while we chow on grass.

How to dry corn husks for guinea pigs

Morry, Sharky and Coppy appreciate the results of their slaves hard work

Now that summer is around the corner, corn has been popping up for sale at our local markets. While guinea pigs shouldn't have too much corn, the husks are another story. They are nutritionally similar to grass and hay (31.6% crude fiber, 2.6% crude protein), making them a healthy snack.

Since every cavy here loves corn husks, we always pick up as much as possible and set some aside to dry and save for later. Dried husks are a favorite piggy treat that can be enjoyed even when corn goes out of season. Here are instructions on how to prepare them.

Food bowl tricks

"Waiter, I have been waiting for a whole half minute!"

We pigs have learned to recognize the clinking of our food bowls as a signal that dinner is about to be served. The sound never fails to bring us scampering from our pigloos and cozy hideaways. Belka and Revy show us their signature food bowl maneuvers.

Red or green bell peppers for guinea pigs?

Bell peppers are a great vegetable to include in your guinea pig's diet - they are high in Vitamin C and low in calcium, which makes them a good choice especially for pigs who are prone to bladder stones. When given a choice between red or green though, which is the better pick?

Our humans particularly like this picture because it looks like Coppy is smiling for the camera. Those piggy lips!

Guinea Pig Weight Charts

Routinely weighing your guinea pig is a recommended part of guinea pig care. Since sudden weight loss and a decreased appetite are among the first noticeable symptoms of illness, regular weighing is good practice. Kitchen scales are the perfect size for guinea pigs and provide more accurate readings than the larger scales meant to be used by humans. The whole chase-grab-weigh-record process is quick and doesn't take more than a few minutes. The most time consuming part is trying to nab everyone as they scramble for cover.

We have compiled a series of charts showing each pig's growth and changes in weight over time, starting from when they were adopted. Belka, Truffle and Peaches were adopted at the same time and were all about the same age, which explains the similarities in their charts. Both Poof and Revy were a bit older when they were adopted separately later, which accounts for the different trends in their respective charts.
