Skidding around on the floor
Hardwood floors make it difficult for our piggy feet to keep traction! Coppy and Sharky always used to skid around madly during out of cage time - and not always intentionally.

A guinea pig's morning exercises
Some humans make it a point to exercise in the morning. Well, Belka is a cavy who also enjoys an early workout. She takes advantage of the space available in our C&C fleece cage to sprint laps, wind around obstructions, leap over objects and hurdle upstairs. Her favorite obstacles include pigloos, tunnels, huts, tents, food bowls and anything else she can find lying around the cage.

Guinea pig laundry
This is what it looks like in the laundry room when our humans change our C&C cage and wash all of our laundry.

Poof munches on mint leaves
Poof is a guinea pig who happens to love eating herbs! She has so many favorites, it is difficult to say which she likes best - cilantro, parsley, dill, basil, fennel and mint, Poof will gobble them down without pause.

Tracking your guinea pigs weight
Regularly weighing your guinea pigs is good practice - not only does it give you an idea of what weight fluctuations are normal for your pig, but it also allows you to identify potentially worrisome trends, such as a gradual weight loss. As we have written before, sudden weight loss and decreased appetite are some of the first symptoms to show up when cavies fall ill so tracking your pigs weight is essential for their long term health (see earlier post here).

Surveying her new domain |
For those of you interested in guinea pig C and C cage layouts, Revy would like to show off her newly remodeled cage! Our contractors (aka the humans) gave her cage an upgrade last weekend, adding in a second floor loft and ramp. She had to put down a sizeable piggy bean payment and borrow some from the neighboring pigs, but thinks it was well worth it.

Corn husks, a guinea pig favorite!

Morry, Sharky and Coppy eating happily in a large pile of corn husks |
Many people have let their cavy nibble the occasional ear of corn (fresh and uncooked of course), but what they don't know is that guinea pigs can also eat corn husks. As much as we guinea pigs enjoy eating corn itself, we love the corn husks even more! It is one of our most favorite foods, next to fresh grass.

Keep your cavies warm in winter
Just a friendly reminder to keep your guinea pigs warm and dry indoors during the chilly winter months! Guinea pigs are particularly susceptible to upper respiratory infections (URIs), which can result from exposure to cold damp environments - such as soiled bedding or being kept outdoors/in the garage.

Raise cavy morale!
Just sharing these in case you haven't seen them yet! Many people are familiar with the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster that was commissioned by the British government during World War II to raise public morale in the event of an invasion or other wartime emergency.

A Guinea Pig's Normal Body Temperature
Fellow cavies, does your human like to spend extra time cuddling you on chilly days? Well, this is because us guinea pigs operate at a higher normal body temperature than humans do!

Sharing hay and grass
It was surprisingly sunny out yesterday (73 degrees F) so we piggies got to sit outside and munch on timothy hay while one of our slaves changed our cages indoors.
